Fleet Safety

Vehicles are a part of everyday life and as a result their dangers are often overlooked - complacency can be a real problem. But workplace transport continues to be the one of the biggest causes of fatal accidents at work. Reversing alone causes about a quarter of the fatal accidents.

An employer’s first consideration should always be the safety of their staff when reversing at their or any premises. Where reversing cannot be avoided, there should be clear guidance that spells out how to plan for safety, which should involve taking sensible, cost-effective measures to ensure a safe site, safe vehicles and safe drivers.

The Transport Sector consistently has the third highest worker fatality rate each year, only the agriculture and construction sectors have higher rates of fatality.

On average 33 work-related fatalities are reported to the Irish Health & Safety Authority in the transport sector every year.

Approximately 1000 work-related non-fatal injuries are reported.  In addition are the accidents that cause damage to property and stock.

The most common workplace transport accidents involve:

  1. Being struck or run over by a vehicle
  2. Falling from vehicles
  3. Vehicles overturning
  4. Vehicles running out of control
  5. Vehicles being driven by untrained drivers

Safety, Health and Welfare of Work Act 2005 and Safety, Health and Welfare of Work Regulations 2007

Key Points of Recent Legislation

Employers and self-employed persons have a duty to provide a safe place and safe systems of work.  They must take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety, not only of their workforce, but also of members of the public and others who might be affected by their activities.

This act places the burden of proof and responsibility on ‘The Company’ to ensure that workers that work outside the normal place of work are empowered with tools, equipment and vehicles that are deemed safe.  Safety standards and options are continuously evolving, and in many cases legislation is making adhering to same mandatory.

How can you minimise your risk?

RODS (Rear Obstacle Detection Systems)

Advances in 12 - 24v Camera and Recording solutions appear regularly that can greatly reduce, if not eliminate, avoidable accidents.

These technologies are perhaps some of the most important innovations for fleet vehicle safety since the Airbag.

No matter how good your driving skills are, modern vehicles seem to be designed to make it impossible to judge how much room there is when reversing into a parking space or what dangers lie out of sight behind your vehicle.

It is important to remember that regardless of what system used your driver must ensure that the features are working.

There should be a system in place to report any defects.

It is also important for your drivers to remember that though they may be offered aids to safety, they are still also responsible for their own actions when controlling a mechanically propelled vehicle.
